Brief Outline of the letter to the central leadership (in Chinese)

Our letter include 4 points:

1) Support reform in higher education and support the goal of building

first class universities in the world

2) China should build research universities like Stanford, MIT, and

Caltech. HUST is a typical research university, one of the best in China

and should be supported:

(1) top 10 in a number of official and non-official rankings

(2) 41 doctoral degree granting units

(3) number of academicians ranked 8th among all universities,

(4) in the 1999 Science and Tech. Awards of the ministry of

education (MOE), HUST ranked 2nd (Tsing Hua 1st ) in total awards

and ranked 1st in first prizes (HUST 6, Tsinghua 3)

(5) HUST more research funding from defense industry than any MOE

university

3) Establish a fair university ranking system. Should not just support old

famous universities. University support should be connected to the

performance and ranking, should introduce market style competition

4) If Hubei cannot support two key universities, government should support

HUST to move to Shenzhen

(1) About 10000 HUST graduates working in Shenzhen, more than any

other university

(2) Hua Wei, the best Chinese telecommunication company, employed

around 2500 HUST graduates (at all level managers and engineers)

(3) Shenzhen must have a good research university to develop High

Tech
