Dear ALL:
XiaoHong has left us. Although his flesh has become ashes (just like we all will
someday), I believe that the is crying with us too because it was not his choice to separate
from hislovely wife, XiaoLan and beloved son, John. XiaoHong not only was the head, a
greatfriend and a big brother of 79H, but also he was a good husband, a great father, an
excellent physician and a model scientist. I think it would be his wish for all of us to
encourageeach other, help each other, care for each other and move forward.
To memorize XiaoHong as a good husband, let us all learn to love our spouse without
criticizing him or her; support our spouse without reservation; and overcome the difficult
times of life without blaming each other. He had set a great example for us by supporting
and encouraging XiaoLan with his love, wisdom and intelligence.
To memorize XiaoHong as a great father, let us all learn to love our children, tell them
we love them even when they make mistakes (even when we are upset at them), show
hem that we love them by attending PTO meetings and by becoming involved in what
they are interested in. During the absence of XaioLan, XiaoHong played both roles as
father and mother in loving and caring for their two boys.
To memorize XiaoHong as an excellent physician and scientist, we should be proud
ofhim because we have owned the same name TongJi 79H. His name will be
memorized by whole 79H for ever. Although for someone like me, I will never be able to
achieve what he hadachieved; at least I have someone like XiaoHong to look up to and
to be proud of.
For those of you who really would like to pray with sincerity, I invite you to pray with
me. We pray that God give the strength, energy and peace to both XiaoLan and Weiping
for them to overcome this time of sorrow and to have the strength to move forward
smoothly.
All the best,
Xu, Chengen

Dear Tongji alumni and friends:
We are grateful to Dr. Mei Zuguo at CDC for his hard work on communicating with Dr. Ou Xiaolan and other people in China and keeping us updated regarding the post accident activities for Dr. Wang Xiaohong and his younger son James. The following are some updates:
1. A formal farewell memorial was held for Xiaohong and James in Yangzhou and their bodies were cremated thereafter.
2. Xiaolan and his old son John will carry Xiaohong and James' ashes back to Atlanta on August 11.
3. Xiaohong's mother and his younger brother are in the process of getting visa and hopefully they can travel to Atlanta on the same flight with Xiaolan and John.
4. Emory University will hold a formal memorial service to celebrate Xiaohong's short but glorious life on August 16. If any of us are planing to attend this service, please contact Dr. Mei Zuguo at CDC. He can arrange airport pickup and some other logistics. Dr. Mei's cell
phone # is 678 592-7056.
5. For those of us who are willing to make a donation for Xiaohong's family, you will be informed of the Dr. Ou Xiaolan's address in Rochester shortly. You may send a check or flowers directly to her. Also, we are proposing to establish a trust fund for John's education,
which is pending until Xiaolan comes back from China.
The memorial service (including a tree planting before and a reception after) will be for 3:30-5:30 pm Monday August 16 in the Canon Chapel on the Emory campus.
Thank you for your attention, sympathy, and concerns.
Wish best regards,
Chaoyang

Member of Emory Psychiatry Department Killed in Car Crash in China Xiaohong Wang, MD, PhD, a promising researcher at the interface between immunology and psychiatry with particular regard to anxiety, depression and mood disorders in patients with cancer and other medical illnesses, was killed Saturday, July 24, in a car accident along with his sixth-grade son Jim while vacationing in Wuhan, China. He had returned to China for the first time in a number of years to visit his parents. Dr. Wang's wife, Dr. Xiao Lan Ou, and their older son, John, escaped injury in the accident. Dr. Wang, 47, was an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences in the Emory University School of Medicine. He practiced throughout the Emory system at Emory University Hospital, Emory Crawford Long Hospital, Wesley Woods Geriatric Hospital, and Grady Memorial Hospital, where his main clinical responsibilities were in the psychiatric emergency room. "Xiaohong Wang was a model faculty member who was universally liked and respected," said psychiatry department chairman Dr. Charles Nemeroff. "This is a tragedy and a shock whose pain will be felt not only by his family but by all his friends and colleagues here at Emory." Dr. Wang was a graduate of the Tongji Medical University in Wuhan, China, who had served an internship at Wayne State University in Detroit and a residency at the State University of New York - Upstate Medical University in Syracuse. He had also pursued his education at Texas A&M where he earned a PhD. A member of the American Psychiatric Association, he had been recognized with a Janssen Psychiatry Resident Award of Excellence, a Janssen Faculty Career Development Award, a Young Investigator Award from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, a psychiatric research fellowship sponsored by the APA and Wyeth-Ayerst, and a Research Scientist Development Award from the National Institute of Mental Health. Dr. Wang was also an outstanding teacher, receiving the psychiatry residents' teaching award in 2003. He came to Emory in 2001 and his research program was regarded as extremely promising. His studies provided novel insights into the role of inflammation in the development of mood disorders as well as the regulation of the neuroendocrine system. He had taken on three postdoctoral research fellows just in the past several months. "Xiaohong was a treasured friend, whom we will all miss terribly," said Dr. Andrew H. Miller, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and director of psychiatric oncology at Emory's Winship Cancer Institute. "He was on a major upswing in his career, and his premature death is all the more tragic when considering his immense potential to make significant contributions to the lives of so many." The funeral was held in China. The department plans to hold a memorial service in Atlanta. Dr. Wang resided in Tucker.
7/29 Email from Dr. Wang, Xiaohong's former Boss Prof. Andrew Miller about the service on Aug. 16 (Yaning is Xiaohong's older brother in NJ):
Dear Zuguo (and Yaning),
Final plans at Emory are to hold the ceremony at 1:30 pm on Monday, August 16 at the Cannon Chapel on the Emory campus. There will not be a tree planting at this time, because we are told the tree will not
survive if planted at this time of the year. We will plant one later in the fall. I will also forward the requests for music, and we will put Yaning Wang on the schedule of speakers. Please spread the word. I will send you the formal announcement when it becomes available. Regards,
Andy
