This update contains the email message send to our alumni net, two meeting notices, and additional HUST related news in Chinese.
1. Professor YANG Shuzhi retired from the post of HUST president and Professor ZHOU Ji became the new president in June, 1997. Professor Zhou is from the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and obtained his Ph.D. degree in USA in early 1980's. Details about the new leadership team of HUST can be found at our web sites.
2. Thanks to the hard work of Professor YANG Qing and his student, our regular web site at URI is now back. The new address is http://www.ele.uri.edu/~hust/ (please note the ~). The backup site at Wisconsin (http://www.neurophys.wisc.edu/~cai/hust/) still works, but please use the URI site for entering/updating alumni information whenever possible.
3. In 1997, two professors of HUST became fellows (Yuan Shi) of Chinese Academy of Engineering (Zhongguo Gongchen Yuan): Professor ZHANG Yongchuan of electrical power engineering and Professor CUI Kun of mechanical engineering.
4. HUST General Alumni Association held its annual meeting in November 1997. Professor YANG Qing (past co-president of HUAAN) was named a member of the HUST Alumni Foundation.
5. For those who do not know, several institutes have been established within HUST during the past two to three years: Mechanical Engineering, Energy, Material Sciences, Liberal Arts, etc. Please see our web sites for details.
6. Over a year ago, we announced a project of contributing thesis to HUST library. We have contacted HUST and the library on several occassions and have not got any information on what format will be accepted and where to send the thesis. We will keep you posted on this matter.
7. We have requested HUST news in Chinese (electronic format) from HUST so that we can put it on our web sites and keep our members better informed about what's happening in HUST. It is very likely that HUST will be able to provide us with such information.
8. There is a home visiting delegate to Hubei, detailed information is enclosed at the end.
9. Solicitaion of Conference and Registration Form
The HUST Alumni Association of North America is greatly honored to announce that The Greater Boston Area Chinese Society of Professionals has selected the HUST Alumni Association to help enlist candidates to attend the 1998 Conference of Overseas Chinese Young Scholars. The Conference is sponsored by the Chinese Association of Science and Technology. It will be held in Beijing in August. To our best knowledge, all expenses, including traval and lodging in China are covered by the Conference. The international travel expense is considered upon the request of the attendees.

The Overseas Exchanges Association of Hubei Province, P.R. China is organizing the third time "international home coming delegation". The subject of this delegation is to promote hi-tech information exchange between overseas and China, as well as explore the possibilities of technology and business cooperation. According to the visitors' field of interest, the provincial government can also arrange any requested visits to local universities or companies. Hubei welcome any one who is interested in this event to join this delegation.
For this year, we encourage people from overseas other than USA to join us, and people who come from province other than Hubei is welcomed as well.
The visit is scheduled from May 17 to May 24. All hotel, meal and travel expenses of the delegation inside Hubei Province during above mentioned period will be covered by the Provincial government. However, you are responsible for your international travelling expenses.
As the organizer of this delegation, I am responsible for selecting candidates from overseas. ●留学人物追踪：第九届全国人大代表、华中理工大学校长周济
（３）华中工大启动跨世纪人才工程
新学期开始，华中理工大学启动了以培养更多拔尖人才为目的的“１１３”跨世纪优
秀人才工程。建校４０多年来，该校孜孜不倦地培养造就人才，使该校涌现出一批拔
尖人才和学科带头人。今年学校推出的“１１３”工程，也就是在２０００年培养１
０名优秀中青年教师、１００名中青年学科带头人和３００名教学、科研骨干。
被列入“１１３”工程中第一梯队的１０名优秀中青年教师都是经过层层筛选出来的
。力学系博士生导师王乘教授，１９８６年在美国麻省理工学院航天航空系获博士学
位回国之后，９年多的时间里主持承担了３０多项国家科研任务，并用自己的科研经
费建立起一个拥有１００多万元固定资产的工程计算研究中心；文学院的风笑天教授
，公开出版３部学术专著，主编了２部教材，另参编了著作、教材７部，在我国社会
研究方法领域中，具有较大影响。
为培养特殊人才，学校采取了超常规的措施：对于１０名优秀中青年教师，根据他们
的科研现状，个人对学科发展独特见解的水平和新立研究项目的发展等有关情况，由
学校提供５万至４０万元的专项基金。１０名优秀中青年教师，每人每年可享受５０
００元津贴；１００名学科带头人每人每年２０００元；３００名教学科研骨干每人
８００元。

【留学新闻】
（１）留学人物追踪：第九届全国人大代表、华中理工大学校长周济
新任华中理工大学校长周济教授最近又添一喜，他光荣地当选为第九届全国人大代表
，将要带着高校师生员工的重托迈进人民大会堂，履行人民代表的崇高职责。此时此
际，他深感自己肩上的担子更重了。
赴会之前，周济代表在“两会”上所要讲的话题业已酝就：如何落实科教兴国战略，
发展科技和教育，实现党的十五大所描绘的宏伟蓝图。
周济于１９７０年从清华大学机械制造专业毕业，１９７８年考入华中理工大学攻读
硕士研究生。１９８０年９月，已过而立之年的周济，被国家选派赴美学习。
自１９８４年春回国以来，周济先后主持建成了中国机械工程设计领域最大的ＣＡＤ
（计算机辅助设计）中心和先进的ＣＩＭＳ（计算机集成制造系统）中心。他带领助
手们坚持教学、科研与工程实际相结合，长期致力于ＣＡＤ、优化设计、数控等方面
的研究与开发，成果累累。
他和助手们合作攻关的研究成果，先后有２２项获省、部级以上奖励，其中工程优化
设计及计算系统、工业汽轮机方案设计专家系统和数控技术，在国际上也属于先进的
。他为国家培养了５０多名博士和１００余名硕士，并出版了８部专著，发表了２０
０余篇论文。
周济代表为我国机械工业的技术进步和工程技术人员的培养作出了重大贡献。他深有
体会地说，我国的经济要上去，必须发展高科技。高校的科研与开发要“顶天立地”
。所谓“顶天”，就是出高水平的科研成果，抢占学科制高点；所谓“立地”，就是
努力实现高技术产业化，将科技成果转化为生产力，为地方经济建设服务，使科教兴
