According to the News of Chinese News Agency, by a recently completed comprehensive study conducted by the Chinese higher education evaluation study association and Shanghai higher education research institute, the "Chinese Higher Education Evaluation Journal" published by higher education research center of National Education Commission published the ranking of Chinese universities for year 1994-1995.

By comparing many aspects, including Ph.D. sites, Master degree sites, national key study subjects, national key lab., number of students, building area, volumn of library, research grants, student to faculty ratio, quality of research, quality of students and general reputation. They list top 30 universities, and among the top 10 are:

1. Beijing University
2. Tsinghua University
3. Nanjing University
4. Zhejiang University
5. Shanghai Jiao-tong University
6. Fudan University
7. Tianjin University
8. Huazhong University of Science and Technology
9. Xian Jiao-tong University
10. Harbin Institute of Technology
