Dear students, colleagues and alumni,
Miss Xu Yan, a second year PhD student in the Division of Social Science, passed away in the company of her caring parents, good friends and colleagues in the early morning of October 2 at Tseung Kwan O Hospital.
Xu Yan's untimely death came as a shock to all of us because from Xu Yan's admission to the hospital and diagnosis of suffering from acute Leukemia to her tragic death, it took less than six days. A charming, good natured lady with potentially the highest academic achievements and a promising future, Xu Yan’s unexpected demise is devastating for her parents. Not only have her parents painfully lost their beloved daughter and their biggest source of pride, they have inadvertently also lost the only economic backbone in a family that basically lacks a stable income source.
As virtually all of those born in the early 1980s in urban China, Xu Yan
was the only child in the family. And as an employee in an ailing enterprise, Xu Yan’s father became a victim in China's quest for economic reforms and growth. Due to poor health, Xu Yan's mother has also retired recently.
In view of these adverse circumstances and on compassionate grounds the undersigned has decided to launch a donation campaign to help Xu Yan's family in the anticipated difficult economic times ahead. Donation accounts have thus been set up specifically for this purpose and have been activated between now and October 24, 2008. We earnestly plead that you kindly assist in helping the bereaved family.
Details concerning particulars of the donation are spelled out in the details below. Please note that, by virtue of an official receipt that will be provided to you, you may claim tax deduction for donation that exceeds HK$100. Please note that no official receipt will be issued for cash, bank-in or cheque donations that are less than HK$100.
1. Cash
A counter will be set up for cash donations at the Atrium (near Lift 2) on October 8th (Wednesday), 9th (Thursday) and 10th (Friday), from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Alternatively, you may also do so at the front counter of the Finance Office (Room 5414 on 5/F, via Lifts 17-18) during office hours (9:00 am - 12:45 pm and 2:00 pm - 5:15 pm Monday through Friday, except for the public holiday on Tuesday). An official receipt will be issued by the Finance Office on request for donations of HK$100 or above.
2. Cheque
Cheques should be made payable to "The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology" and be sent to Finance Office, HKUST, Clear Water Bay, Kowloon. On the back of the cheque, please write the following, "Donation for the family of Xu Yan". Please also put your name, address and telephone number on the back of the cheque so that an official receipt can be sent to you by either internal mail or by post. You can hand in the cheque in person at the FO counter mentioned in the preceding paragraph.
Please note the opening hours of the counter. If you leave your cheque at
the FO counter, an official receipt will be issued in about a week's time for donations of HK$100 or above.
3. Donation deposited with special bank accounts
Three special accounts have been set up to collect donations for Xu Yan's family, from now until October 24. The account name is "The Hong Kong University of Science & Technology" and the account numbers are as follows:
Hang Seng Bank : 361-008071-677

Yidao Cai
